Christmas Comes Early for Luís Rouxinol

According to Luís Rouxinol, he purchased Dollar as a gift for himself.

hmmm..... I usually buy myself clothes, shoes, and an electronic gadget, but a horse? It must be nice. And it sure is if you are Luís Rouxinol, who recently purchased Dollar, an American Quarter Horse from us here in California.

Luís Rouxinol bullfights on horseback and is one of the top professional bullfighters in Portugal. Having Dollar will greatly further his career.

Just so you understand, Dollar bullfights "bloodless" style in California... meaning the bull is not "bled" nor killed. The challenge is definitely there because there are no sharp lances poking at the bulls back. It's all done with Velcro®. In Portugal, they don't kill the bulls in the arena, but they do use bandelleras with pointy tips to bleed the bull and slow it down.

Since Dollar is experienced with a "full-charging" bull, one can only imagine what he can do with a tired one.

TABU magazine released an article by Emanual Costa titled "Fora de Época" (translated “Outside of Time”) which describes the quotidiano of three professional Cavaleiros: Rui Salvador, Luís Rouxinol and Sónia Matias.

Here are some of their quotes in Portuguese and our interpretation in English.

Quote from Luís Rouxinol in Portuguese:
“Este ano dei um presente a mim mesmo”
Luís Rouxinol said, "This year, I gave myself a gift". Referring to the bullfighting horse "Dollar" (pictured up top) whom he acquired from us here in California.

Quote from Rui Salvador in Portuguese:
“se aparecer um cavalo especial, quem sabe continue”
Rui Salvador says he'll wait after his 25th year of alternativa, and if a special horse comes along, who knows... he may continue.

Quote from Sónia Matias in Portuguese:
“uma boa ajuda e companhia num ambiente dominado por homens”
Sónia Matias affirms that the family is “a good aid and company in an environment dominated for men”.

It seems that not only do we have lots of preparation to do for next season, but the bullfighters themselves have many things on their plate.

2007 will be a new year full of challenges and opportunities.... and many blessings for all!

Now that bullfighting season has winded down, we all should have done what Sónia Matias did... go to Hawaii for vacation. The weather is so much warmer, but I believe she had a few rainy days. All in all, she had a great time.... lucky girl!
